Why UK-Made Matters to us.

A Personal Journey to Sustainability and Quality

In my journey with SmithTaylor, since taking on ownership in 2021, I’ve discovered a deeper appreciation for the simple choices that shape our world. Manufacturing goods locally isn’t just a process for us; it's a story of community, sustainability, and craftsmanship. Today, I want to share this journey with you, reflecting on the lessons learned and the joys found in making products from scratch right here in the UK.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint by Embracing Local

Have you ever considered the journey a product takes before it arrives in your hands? It was a question that led me to reevaluate our sourcing strategy at SmithTaylor. I found joy in the simple act of reducing our carbon footprint by choosing suppliers closer to home. This not only lessens the environmental impact but also brings a certain peace of mind, knowing we’re contributing positively to our planet. With a high proportion of tableware on the UK market imported from Asia, offering a product that is manufactured in Worcestershire is something we are deeply proud of.

Supporting Local Businesses and the Community

We’ve all seen the depressing reports on the news regarding the decline of local economies; the closing of shops and the lack of investment in regions outside of London. Pershore, where we are based at SmithTaylor, is no different. However, walking through the bustling streets of Pershore, and supporting the local coffee shops and eateries, it’s clear there is a vibrant community who are proud of our town. I realised even more then, the importance of supporting local businesses. Each purchase is a lifeline, a way to keep the heart of our communities beating strong. Through SmithTaylor, I've seen first-hand how choosing UK-made enriches lives, creates jobs and fosters local talent.

High Quality Craftmanship

There’s something unmistakable about the touch, the feel, and the story behind every locally-made product. Our journey at SmithTaylor has been a testament to the unparalleled quality of British craftsmanship and passion, since our formation by Peter Smith in 2012. By choosing locally-made, our customers support and preserve these skills, and I am forever grateful for that.

Transparent and Ethical Practices

Navigating the complexities of managing an ethical manufacturing business, I’ve learned that transparency is not just a policy and promise to our customers, but for our team also. Buying UK-made means supporting fair wages and safe working conditions, respecting our employees and giving them opportunities to grow and develop in a supportive environment.

Celebrating UK Heritage

I appreciate that celebrating our heritage may come across as clichéd. However, finding the balance between focusing on the future whilst respecting our heritage is important. This is a subject perhaps worthy of a whole blog post, but in brief, each SmithTaylor coaster and placemat is a narrative of British ingenuity and creativity. It's incredibly fulfilling to share our story and craftsmanship with our customers, inspiring others to be creative whilst embracing our collective identity and manufacturing past.

Conclusion

My journey so far with SmithTaylor has shown me that every choice, no matter how small, contributes to our future and our collective responsibility to make a difference. By choosing UK-made, you’re not just buying a product; you’re making a choice about the world you want to live in. We welcome you joining us on this journey, supporting local economies, reducing our environmental impact, and celebrating our heritage with every choice we make.
